Twin Screw pump

A twin screw pump is a type of positive displacement pump that consists of two intermeshing screws within a chamber. As the screws rotate, they move the fluid through the pump and create a vacuum at the inlet and pressure at the outlet. This allows the pump to handle fluids of different viscosities.

How does a Twin Screw Pump work?

Twin screw pumps work in the following manner: 

  1. Intake: As the two screws (one being a driving screw and the other a driven screw) start rotating in opposite directions, due to their helical shape, a series of cavities are formed between the screws and the pump casing. This action creates a vacuum at the pump inlet, allowing the fluid to flow into these cavities.
  2. Conveyance: The rotation of the screws then transports the trapped fluid along the length of the pump. The design of the screws and casing prevents the fluid from flowing back towards the inlet, ensuring unidirectional flow.
  3. Compression and Discharge: As the fluid reaches the end of the screws, the space in which it is contained gradually decreases, slightly increasing the pressure. The fluid is then forced out of the pump through the discharge port.
